Eco-friendly Fens Expansion Construction Begins

Fens Expansion construction is under way. The project will utilize environmentally sound construction practices by using recycled building materials and minimizing impact to the construction site.

To lessen the building’s consumption of carbon energy, the finished space will feature energy-efficient kitchen equipment, floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize natural light, and solar paneling on the facade to help regulate the interior temperature.

The project, slated for completion in September, 2008, will add 6,000 square feet of space, 456 seats, a two-story atrium with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a balcony on the College Center level to the Fens. The area will have enlarged kitchen and serving spaces, a tunnel to the new underground parking garage, and improved shipping and receiving facilities.

In mid-February, temporary walls along the exterior of the structure and construction fences were raised. Demolition of the lower Fens terrace and excavation of the expansion site have also begun.

Pile driving is scheduled to take place over Spring Break in March to lessen the impact of noise disruption. Construction plans through early May include installing plywood protection along the exterior wall, pouring the concrete foundation, and erecting the steel frame.
