Get a Free Energy-Efficient Lightbulb!
A recent study in Mesick Hall found that if the 317 incandescent bulbs used by residents were replaced with Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs), based upon current energy rates, Simmons could save more than $32,286 over the lifetime of these CFLs. Facilities has already replaced over 80% of its lighting with energy-efficient bulbs. Now it’s our turn to do our part!
Why are we doing this?
- CFLs last ten times longer than an incandescent bulb.
- Over its lifetime, one single CFL prevents 1,000-2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
- Energystar reports if every U.S. household replaced their 5 most frequently used light bulbs with ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR, not only would each home save more than $60 a year in energy costs, we would collectively prevent air pollution equivalent to the emissions from 8 million cars.
Who can get a replacement bulb?
- All Simmons students, faculty, staff and administrators
How do I get my CFL for my residence hall or office?
- Get your bulbs from your RAs (Conference Center, Res. Life Office), Sustainability Table or Simmons Facilities at x2290.
- You don’t have to bring a bulb to exchange (incandescent/halogen), but you can — we’ll recycle it!
What if the CFL does not match my light fixture?
- In most cases facilities can purchase the bulb you need, for example a three-way CFB. Contact Simmons Facilities (x2290) for more information.
How do I dispose of my CFB when it stops working?
- You might be surprised to learn that CFLs can last up to 5 years in a standard setting, so you might not have to think about this in the near future. However, since CFL contain small amounts of mercury you must not dispose of them in your trash!
- Please RECYCLE your bulbs in the designated Light Bulb Recycling Bins on campus. Keep an eye out for these bins showing up around the Paper & Plastic Recycling Bins. Closed-loop recycling of these bulbs allows 100% of the materials to be reclaimed and reused!
