Get Involved
Simmons is passionate about doing what we can to reduce our environmental footprint—from investing in sustainable building practices that will substantially reduce our energy and water use, to committing the College to carbon neutrality. But not all actions that matter are big ones. Each of us, in our day-to-day activities, can make small changes that make a difference. Together, we can protect and preserve the environment, and begin to address the challenge of global climate change.
Here are some ideas to get started:
- Make your voice heard at the Sustainability Committee and the Climate Change Committee. Learn who's serving on these committees as your representative and stay abreast of this imporant work. For information, email sustainability@simmons.edu.
- Recycle! It may sound passe, but in the last seven years, we've recycled over 400 tons of materials, saving 350 barrels of oil, 4,000 trees and 6 million gallons of water that otherwise would have been required for the production of these materials. More »
- If you want to see more done about recycling, volunteer for Recyclemania! RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in the United States that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Volunteers are needed to help weigh and record how much Simmons is recycling. Volunteers meet on Wednesdays at 5:30 in South Hall. For more info, contact sadie.broadley@simmons.edu.
- Participate in the free energy-efficient lightbulb program. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to trade in your old, inefficient incandescent bulbs for free "CFLs" (Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs). Over a lifetime of over five years, one single CFL prevents 1,000-2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere by an old fashioned lightbulb. More »
- Resident students, donate your extras during Project Move-Out. The Sustainability Committee sponsors Simmons Project Move-Out, a program to collect students' discarded dorm room items and donate them to local non-profit organizations. Project Move-Out is designed to decrease campus waste during move-out while benefiting a variety of programs, including domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, and rape crisis and sexual assault programs.
